The Town Meadow

The Town Meadow is a great community space in the middle of town where you can meet friends and family. It is also ideal for community events.

It is located off the High Street opposite the High Street car park. There is a pathway along a riverside walk, linking the main town to the Library and Waitrose.

The Meadow includes a hardscape area for vehicles/market stalls and an open grass space.

Location:  The High Street , Gillingham, United Kingdom, SP8 4AA.

If you would like to hold an event on the Town Meadow,  please contact Gillingham Town Council.

Gillingham Town Council awarded grant funding to make improvements to the Town Meadow.

In 2012 a lease was agreed between Gillingham Town Council and Hall and Woodhouse which secured the Town Meadow for community use until 2037.

A voluntary group was set up under the name of The Town Meadow Group and major improvement work was carried out by a dedicated group of volunteers who constructed a path and added heritage style lighting, a herb garden, flower planters and seating. It is thanks to these volunteers that Gillingham has such a great community green space in the town centre

In 2023, it was necessary for the volunteers to hand the management of the site to Gillingham Town Council, who wanted to expand on the work of the volunteers, by making further improvements to the Town Meadow in order to accommodate more events, which in turn will help to increase footfall in the High Street and help to strengthen and improve the economy.

The Town Meadow provides a community space for local groups and organisations and is the location of many events including Gillingham in Gear, The Fair and Gillingham’s Christmas Event; however, during the wetter months the area was muddy and could not be used. A proposal to improve the surface in order to allow events to be held throughout the year, was submitted by Gillingham Town Council by way of a a grant application to The UK Shared Prosperity Fund, a central pillar of the UK government’s Levelling Up Agenda and in July 2024 the council was notified that Gillingham has been awarded £57,182 towards the project.

Thanks to the grant funding, the Town Council has been able to improve the drainage in order to allow more events to be held throughout the year. Accessibility paths have been constructed for easier access and the existing hard surfaced areas have been resurfaced, edged and improved.

There are also additional benches and flower planters – something that many residents requested during our survey.

A big thank you to everyone who has been involved in the project, especially our grounds team and our contractors who have delivered the project on time and within budget. We are sure you will agree, they have made an excellent job.
