Gillingham Royal Forest Project

Gillingham has a rich history and rose to prominence in medieval times as King John’s favoured royal hunting ground. Gillingham once featured a deer park and a royal hunting lodge and clues remain in the landscape and place names in and around Gillingham that reveal this royal past.

Today the greenspaces here are not only important for the wellbeing of people but for the rare wildlife they continue to support in a landscape that includes ancient hedgerows and veteran trees to open fields and waterways. Raising awareness about Gillingham’s Royal Forest of the past and ensuring access to our greenspaces today – promoting Gillingham as a place for local people and as a destination for visitors – as well as the protection, preservation and enhancement of our environmental and cultural heritage is what led to the Gillingham Royal Forest project.
