GILLINGHAM TOWN MEADOW IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
In 2012 a lease was agreed between Gillingham Town Council and Hall and Woodhouse which secured the Town Meadow for community use until 2037.
A voluntary group was set up under the name of The Town Meadow Group and major improvement work was carried out by a dedicated group of volunteers who constructed a path and added heritage style lighting, a herb garden, flower planters and seating. It is thanks to these volunteers that Gillingham has such a great community green space in the town centre
Gillingham Town Council wish to expand on this work by making further improvements to the Town Meadow in order to accommodate more events, which in turn will help to increase footfall in the High Street and help to strengthen and improve the economy.
The Town Meadow provides a community space for local groups and organisations and is the location of many events including Gillingham in Gear, The Fair and Gillingham’s Christmas Event; however, during the wetter months the area is muddy and cannot be used. The proposal is to improve the surface in order to allow events to be held throughout the year. Accessibility paths will be constructed for easier access and the existing hard surfaced areas will be edged and improved. The project also includes the installation of additional benches, and flower planters.
Gillingham Town Council submitted a grant application to The UK Shared Prosperity Fund, a central pillar of the UK government’s Levelling Up Agenda and in July 2024 the council was notified that Gillingham has been awarded £57,182 towards the project.
